The relative humidity indicators (Humidity Indicator Cards – HIC) are percent-dotted cards that are impregnated with a solution of Cobalt(II) chloride in varying concentrations. Cobalt(II) chloride is highly hygroscopic and reacts to moisture by changing the colour from blue-violet, purple to peach purple. Due to this physical phenomenon, the relative humidity of the environment, in which the card is located, can be read out from the individual dots.

These moisture indicators are most commonly used as a cheap way to determine the humidity in the containers. HIC cards are suitable for packaging of semiconductors, PCBs and electronics in general, military technologies, optical components, synthetic and organic materials, metals and other applications requiring verification of relative humidity in a closed environment. In case of package damage and moistening of goods, the HIC card will alert the need to verify the goods and change the packaging. Once the environment is dried, the cards will change their colour back to blue.
The cards are suitable for companies that want to keep a standard blue – rose indication.
